Laboratory spectroscopy in support of atmospheric measurements
Optical measurements of trace species in the atmosphere require precise, accurate spectroscopic data for the molecules under study. This laboratory exits to provide high quality spectroscopic data for the interpretation of data from existing satellite, balloon, ground, and aircraft instruments, as well as to provide sufficient data to assess the feasibility of new instruments
Ground-based lidar measurements of stratospheric ozone. The NASA/GSFC stratospheric ozone lidar trailer experiment STROZ LITE
The major research objective is the measurement of high precision vertical profiles of ozone between 20-40 kilometers. The precision is such that the instrument should be capable of detecting a small trend (on the order of less that 1 percent per year) over a 5-10 year period. Temperature was measured between 30 and 365 km. The Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) mobile lidar was installed at Table Mountain and a comparison between it and the permanent Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) lidar was made over the course of about 3 weeks. The lidars agreed very well between 20 and 40 km, and under certain conditions up to 45-47 km. There were several anomalies that both lidars followed very well. Agreement with Rocket Ozonesonde (ROCOZ) and electrochemical concentration cell (ECC) sondes was also very good

Cardiac mass in glucocorticoid-hypertensive rats with and without circulating adrenaline
There is evidence that catecholamines may promote the development of cardiac hypertrophy in hypertension. To test the hypothesis that adrenaline directly determines left ventricular mass, normotensive Wistar rats were made adrenaline-deficient by adrenalectomy and hypertensive by administration of glucocorticoid. Blood pressure, heart rate, and body weight of the adrenalectomised group were not significantly different from a glucocorticoid treated control group with intact adrenals. Heart weight was significantly lower in the adrenalectomised rats, but this difference disappeared when heart weight was adjusted for body weight. It appears therefore that the presence or absence of adrenaline does not significantly affect cardiac mass in the presence of hypertension in this animal mode

Uncrewed surface vehicles network in support to EOOS: the EuroSea project
A wide range of platforms and systems constitute the current Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) including satellites, research vessels, floats, underwater gliders, fixed-point observatories, sea level stations, high frequency radar and uncrewed surface vehicles. The European Ocean Observing System (EOOS) is designed to align and integrate Europe’s ocean observing capacity, promote a systematic and collaborative approach to collecting information on the state and variability of our seas, and underpin sustainable management of the marine environment and its resources. EOOS attempts to link the currently disparate observing system components and promote novel technology and infrastructure development, standardization, open access to data, and capacity building. Within the framework of EOOS is the EU-funded EuroSea project, with the overall goal to consolidate an integrated interdisciplinary ocean-observing-system to deliver essential information for the wellbeing, blue growth and sustainable management of the ocean, based on the implementation and coordination of the different observing networks above-mentioned, being the Uncrewed Surface Vehicles (USV) technology one of the novelties in terms of network initiative attempting to engage existing and forthcoming actors from public and private sectors, to consolidate an international USV network under common standard operational procedures and regulatory framework in support to EOOS strategy.Peer Reviewe
Form of Supplemental Selenium in Vitamin-Mineral Premixes Differentially Affects Early Luteal and Gestational Concentrations of Progesterone, and Postpartum Concentrations of Prolactin in Beef Cows
Soils with marginal to deficient levels of selenium (Se) are widespread in the northwest, northeast, and southeast US. Supplementation to the diet of forage-grazing beef cattle with a vitamin-mineral mix containing additional Se is recommended in these geographic regions. We have reported that the form of supplemental Se provided to Angus-cross beef cows can affect circulating levels of progesterone (P4) on day 6 of the estrous cycle, a time when increased P4 is known to promote fertility. The objectives of this study were to (1) confirm and expand upon our initial report that the form of Se provided to cows affects early luteal-phase concentrations of systemic P4, (2) determine the effects of the form of Se on concentrations of P4 during gestation, and (3) determine the effects of the form of Se on concentrations of prolactin (PRL) during lactation. Throughout this study, Angus-cross beef cows had ad libitum access to a vitamin-mineral mix containing 35 ppm of Se in either an inorganic form (ISe) or a 1:1 mix of inorganic and organic forms (MIX). We observed a MIX-induced increase (p = 0.006) in systemic concentrations of P4 on day 7 but not on days 4 or 10 of the estrous cycle, consistent with our earlier report. We observed a MIX-induced increase (p = 0.02) in the systemic concentration of P4 at months 1, 3, 5, and 7 of gestation, and a MIX-induced decrease (p \u3c 0.05) in systemic concentrations of PRL at months 5 and 6 of lactation. In summary, the form of Se provided to cows can be manipulated to affect the early luteal phase and gestational concentrations of P4, and postpartum concentrations of PRL
